Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio was born in 1502 in Galicia, Spain. Coming from a poor family, he worked as a shepherd in his youth and later traveled to Mexico in search of opportunity. There, he became a successful businessman, building roads that connected cities and helped trade flourish. Despite his wealth, Sebastian lived simply and used his earnings to support the poor. Twice widowed, he eventually gave away his possessions and joined the Franciscans as a lay brother at the age of 72. Known for his humility, charity, and deep faith, he spent his final years caring for the sick and begging for alms to support his monastery. He died in 1600 at the age of 98, leaving behind a legacy of selfless service.

Practical Lessons

  1. Use Your Skills to Serve Others: Sebastian built roads that improved people’s lives. Whatever your job—whether in business, service, or home life—ask how you can make daily tasks meaningful by helping those around you.
  2. Live Simply, Give Generously: Even with success, Sebastian chose a life of simplicity and charity. Instead of focusing on acquiring more, look for ways to share time, money, or talents with those in need.
  3. It’s Never Too Late to Follow God’s Call: At 72, Sebastian became a Franciscan, proving that God calls us at every stage of life. Don’t be afraid to change direction, seek deeper faith, or take on a new mission, no matter your age.

Prayer

Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio, humble servant of God, you dedicated your life to hard work, generosity, and faith. May we follow your example of love and service, finding joy in every stage of life. Amen.
