DAILY DEVOTIONS, LIFELONG FAITH

Saint of the day
- 06 June

St. Norbert (Bishop)

Born into nobility, Saint Norbert lived comfortably until a near-fatal lightning strike sparked radical conversion. Renouncing wealth, he preached repentance and Eucharistic devotion. His life shows that God can use sudden moments to awaken hearts—and that true renewal begins with personal transformation.

St. Norbert was born around 1080 in Xanten, Germany, into a noble family. Initially living a comfortable life at court as a canon, he experienced a radical conversion after being nearly killed by lightning during a storm. Moved to repentance, Norbert gave away his wealth and began preaching a life of reform, penance, and Eucharistic devotion. He eventually founded the Premonstratensian Order (also known as the Norbertines), a community of priests and canons who lived in poverty, served the poor, and evangelized through faithful preaching and reverent liturgy. Later appointed Archbishop of Magdeburg, he worked tirelessly to reform clergy, protect the sacraments, and promote peace amid political and ecclesiastical turmoil. St. Norbert died in 1134, known for his deep love of the Eucharist and zeal for Church renewal.

Practical Lessons

  1. Don’t Wait to Change: Norbert’s life shows that real change can begin with one decisive moment. If there’s a habit you need to break or a spiritual practice you’ve delayed starting—start today, not tomorrow.
  2. Protect What’s Sacred: Norbert defended the Eucharist from abuse and neglect. In your daily life, this could mean making time for Mass, preparing intentionally for Communion, or defending the Church lovingly when it’s misrepresented.
  3. Serve Where You Are Needed, Not Just Where You’re Comfortable: As Archbishop, Norbert accepted responsibilities he hadn’t sought but knew were needed. This challenges us to say yes to the difficult tasks—whether helping at home, stepping into a new ministry, or resolving conflict—even when they stretch us.

Prayer

St. Norbert, you answered God’s call with courage, leaving comfort behind to serve Him with your whole heart. Pray for us, that we may be bold in responding to God’s invitations in our own lives. Help us to cherish the Eucharist, live with integrity, and serve the Church faithfully. Through your intercession, may we grow in holiness and courage. Amen.

Quote

“Let us adore Christ with clean hands and pure hearts, that we may serve Him with joy.” — St. Norbert
