DAILY DEVOTIONS, LIFELONG FAITH

Saint of the day

St. Frances of Rome

St Frances of Rome was a saint of the 14th century. Although she desired to devote herself to the religious life, God instead called her to the vocation of wife and mother. After the death of her husband, she would continue to combine her aspirations of religious life with the calling of the lay vocation, and provide a model for those called to both holiness and the responsibilities of this life.

St. Frances of Rome was born in 1384 into a noble family in Rome. From a young age, she desired a life of prayer and service, but at 12, she was married to a nobleman, Lorenzo Ponziani, as was customary for her status. Though she embraced her role as a wife and mother, Frances also devoted herself to charity, helping the poor and sick of Rome. She turned her home into a center of relief during times of famine and plague, personally nursing the ill.

After her husband’s death, she founded the Oblates of Mary, a lay order for women who wished to serve God while remaining in the world. St. Frances of Rome balanced family life with deep spirituality and service to others, showing that holiness can be found in daily responsibilities. She died in 1440 and remains a model for those seeking to integrate faith into everyday life.

Practical Lessons

  1. Find Holiness in Daily Life: Frances showed that one does not need to be a nun to be holy. Whether you’re managing a household, working a job, or caring for family, embrace these roles as opportunities to serve God with love.
  2. Be Ready to Serve in Times of Crisis: She turned her home into a refuge for the needy. Today, this might mean cooking a meal for a sick friend, offering childcare to a struggling parent, or simply being present for someone going through hardship.
  3. Stay Faithful Even When Plans Change: Frances desired a cloistered life but found holiness in marriage and motherhood. When life takes unexpected turns, trust that God is guiding you and make the most of where He has placed you.

Prayer

St. Frances of Rome, devoted wife, mother, and servant of the poor, intercede for us as we strive to live our faith in the midst of daily responsibilities. Help us to see Christ in our families, our work, and those in need. Teach us to trust in God’s plan and to embrace each moment as an opportunity to serve Him with love and humility. Amen.

Quote

“It is most laudable in a married woman that she be devoted to her household, but sometimes she must leave God at the altar to find Him in her daily duties.”—St. Frances of Rome
