St. Clare of Assisi

St. Clare of Assisi left a life of wealth to follow Christ in poverty and prayer. Inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, she led with humility and courage. Her trust in God, even in danger, teaches that true strength comes from faith, and that simplicity and devotion bring lasting peace.

St. Clare of Assisi was born in 1194 into a noble family in Assisi, Italy. Deeply inspired by the preaching and example of St. Francis of Assisi, Clare left behind her comfortable life at the age of 18 to dedicate herself fully to Christ. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, later known as the Poor Clares, embracing a life of poverty, prayer, and simplicity. Clare became abbess of the convent of San Damiano, where she led her sisters with humility and love. She was known for her courage, especially when she held up the Blessed Sacrament to repel invading soldiers, placing all her trust in Christ’s presence. Clare’s life of radical poverty, devotion to prayer, and trust in God made her one of the great female saints of the Church. She died in 1253 and was canonized just two years later.

Practical Lessons

  1. Choose Simplicity: Clare gave up wealth and privilege to embrace a simple life. For us, this might mean decluttering our homes, reducing unnecessary spending, or finding contentment in what we already have.
  2. Trust in God’s Protection: Clare’s confidence in Christ during the threat of invasion reminds us to turn to God in our fears. Instead of letting anxiety rule, we can bring our worries to prayer, trusting that God is truly with us.
  3. Lead with Humility: As abbess, Clare led her sisters through example, not command. In daily life, this can mean guiding others at work or at home by patience, kindness, and consistency, rather than by control or harshness.

Prayer

St. Clare of Assisi, faithful follower of Christ in poverty and prayer, intercede for us. Help us to embrace simplicity, to trust in God’s protection in times of fear, and to lead others with humility and love. May your example inspire us to put Christ at the center of our lives and to live each day in His light. Amen.
