Bl. Stanley Rother was born in 1935 in Okarche, Oklahoma. Raised on a farm in a faithful Catholic family, he grew up with a strong work ethic and a simple love for God. Despite struggling academically in seminary, he persevered and was ordained a priest in 1963. In 1968, he volunteered for mission work in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala, where he served the Tz’utujil people. Learning their language, he translated the New Testament into Tz’utujil and worked side by side with them in farming, building, and worship. As violence spread during Guatemala’s civil conflict, Stanley was targeted for his defense of the poor and his outspoken faith. Warned of danger, he briefly returned to Oklahoma but chose to go back, saying, “The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger.” On July 28, 1981, he was martyred in his rectory. Beatified in 2017, he is the first U.S.-born martyr and a witness to faithful, courageous priesthood.

Practical Lessons

  1. Persevere Through Struggles: Stanley struggled with academics but never gave up on his vocation. In our own lives, we are reminded that setbacks do not define us—persistence and trust in God’s grace do.
  2. Serve Humbly: Stanley lived among the people, farming and working alongside them. Today, we too can serve others not from a distance but with humility, walking with them in their daily struggles.
  3. Stand Firm in Faith: Even in the face of violence, Stanley returned to his flock, showing true courage. In our own challenges, whether small or great, we can stay faithful to Christ, trusting Him to give us strength.

Prayer

Blessed Stanley Rother, faithful shepherd and martyr, intercede for us that we may persevere through struggles, serve others with humility, and remain steadfast in our faith. Pray that we may follow Christ courageously, even when it demands sacrifice. Amen.
