Pope St. Gregory III was born in Syria and became pope in 731 during a time of turmoil in the Church. He is most remembered for his strong defense of sacred images during the iconoclast controversy, when many in the Byzantine Empire sought to destroy holy icons. Gregory convened a synod in Rome to affirm the proper veneration of images as a way to honor Christ and the saints, not as idolatry. He also worked to strengthen the Church’s missionary outreach, especially in northern Europe, supporting St. Boniface in his efforts to evangelize the Germanic peoples. Though he faced political challenges and pressure from powerful rulers, Gregory remained faithful to protecting the Church’s unity and traditions. He died in 741 and is remembered as a courageous shepherd who defended the faith and encouraged evangelization.

Practical Lessons

  1. Stand Firm in Truth: Gregory defended the veneration of holy images even when it was unpopular and dangerous. In our daily lives, we can remain faithful to Catholic teaching, even if it means standing against cultural trends.
  2. Support Missionary Work: Gregory encouraged and supported St. Boniface’s evangelization efforts. Today, we can support missionaries through prayer, donations, or by sharing the faith with those in our own communities.
  3. Protect What is Sacred: Gregory safeguarded sacred images and traditions that lift hearts to God. In our own homes, we can make space for prayer with crucifixes, holy images, and practices that remind us of God’s presence.

Prayer

Pope St. Gregory III, faithful defender of the Church and protector of what is sacred, intercede for us that we may stand firm in the truth, support the spread of the Gospel, and live with reverence for God’s presence in our daily lives. Pray that we may remain courageous and faithful to Christ in all things. Amen.

Quote

“Let us remain steadfast in the tradition of the fathers and hold fast to the images of Christ and His saints, through which we are reminded of their holy lives.”—Pope St. Gregory III
