Blessed Adrian Fortescue

A nobleman and knight, Adrian Fortescue served his king with honor but would not betray his conscience. Refusing to endorse Henry VIII’s break with Rome, he was imprisoned and executed without trial. His quiet courage shows that holiness often lies in steadfast fidelity to truth, even at great personal cost.

Blessed Adrian Fortescue was born around 1476 into a noble English family with close ties to the royal court. A knight of the realm, he served King Henry VIII faithfully and was known for his integrity, generosity, and devotion to the Catholic faith. Despite his loyalty to the crown, Adrian refused to support the king’s break with the Catholic Church and his claim of supremacy over it. For this quiet act of conscience, Adrian was imprisoned and eventually executed in 1539 without trial. A husband, father, landowner, and knight, Blessed Adrian Fortescue lived out his Catholic faith not through grand gestures, but through everyday fidelity, courage, and principle—even when it cost him everything.

Practical Lessons

  1. Stand Firm in Your Convictions: Adrian was a respected man with much to lose, but he refused to compromise his faith. In modern life, this may mean respectfully standing by your beliefs at work, online, or in conversations—even when it’s unpopular or uncomfortable.
  2. Live Faith in the Ordinary: Adrian wasn’t a priest or monk; he was a layman—a husband and father. Like him, we can live our faith in simple, steady ways: through honest work, regular prayer, supporting our families, and making moral choices in business and home life.
  3. Prepare for Daily Courage: Adrian did not seek martyrdom, but when the moment came, he was ready. Build courage now by practicing small acts of virtue: telling the truth when it’s hard, protecting someone being mistreated, or saying no to shortcuts that go against your conscience.

Prayer

Blessed Adrian Fortescue, noble knight and faithful servant of Christ, pray for us. Intercede for us that we may remain steadfast in our convictions and live our faith with quiet courage. Help us to follow your example in our families, our work, and our daily responsibilities, so that we may honor God in all things. May we stand firm in truth, even when it costs us, and remain faithful unto the end. Amen.

Quote
