DAILY DEVOTIONS, LIFELONG FAITH

Finding Freedom Through Faith: My Journey of Healing

15 Jun 2026

Throughout my life, I have faced a silent struggle that many might overlook—an eating disorder combined with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The path to recovery has been filled with challenges, yet my faith has become a wellspring of healing and hope. I wish to share how turning to scripture and embracing surrender to God has profoundly influenced my healing journey.

In the depths of my struggles, I discovered comfort in beloved Bible verses, particularly Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This promise became a guiding light during my darkest times, a reminder that God holds a purpose for my life, even when shadows loom large. Whenever anxiety surged or the grip of my eating disorder tightened, I would recall this verse, allowing hope to gradually replace despair.

Surrendering to God has emerged as a central theme in my recovery. I learned that relinquishing my desire for control opened the door for God’s guidance in my life. Proverbs 3:5 states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” This wisdom resonated deeply within me, prompting me to step away from the weight of my own fears and thoughts, trusting that God would grant me the insights and strength necessary to face my challenges.

As I embarked on my healing journey, I set a target weight to achieve optimal health. At first glance, this goal seemed to revolve around mere numbers, yet I came to liken it to the process of baking a cake. Like creating a delicious cake, one must start with the fundamentals; cracking that first egg, mixing the ingredients, and learning to trust the process are all essential. Each small step reflects my path toward health. Rather than fixating on the end goal, I cultivated an appreciation for every step, valuing the progress and lessons that accompanied each moment.

Sometimes prayer works like this: We ask God for a cake, beautifully finished, but God gives us the ingredients instead. Not because He is withholding, but because He wants us to make it with Him. To God the process matters. He cares more about who we become with Him, than what we can get from Him. Prayer isn’t just about telling God what we want, it’s also Him showing us what He wants for us.

A pivotal realisation through this metaphor is that I am never alone on this journey. Much like a patient baker awaiting the cake to rise, I have learned to trust God’s timeline for my healing. In times of struggle, I remind myself that I can always turn to prayer, finding solace in God’s presence. Each day presents its own set of challenges and triumphs, and by inviting God into my daily struggles, I gain the reassurance that I am moving in the right direction.

By sharing my story, I hope to uplift those traversing a similar path. Recovery from eating disorders and OCD may seem overwhelming, but I have discovered that faith provides an unshakable strength that leads to joy and freedom. Embracing the principle of surrender allows us to release our burdens, relying on God to direct our steps.

Though life’s journey can be arduous, with faith and trust in the Lord, we can uncover hope and healing with each step we take and one day at a time. That is the power of prayer; it is more than the changes that surround us—it is the changes within us. Sometimes God doesn’t move the mountain; He teaches us how to climb it instead.
