Blessed Bertrand of Garrigues, O.P., was born in the late 12th century in Garrigues, France. A contemporary and close companion of St. Dominic, Bertrand was among the earliest members of the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans). He first met Dominic during the Albigensian Crusade, when heresy had taken strong root in southern France. Bertrand, known for his gentleness and charity, was deeply moved by Dominic’s zeal for truth and became one of his most trusted collaborators.

Together, Dominic and Bertrand traveled on foot across France, preaching the Gospel with humility and fervor. Bertrand became one of the first four friars to receive the Dominican habit and was instrumental in spreading the Order’s mission of preaching, poverty, and study. He later served as prior of several Dominican convents, where he trained and guided younger friars, instilling in them Dominic’s vision of holiness and service.

Bertrand was noted for his simplicity, compassion, and devotion to prayer. He was deeply respected by those he served, not only for his preaching but also for his example of living the Gospel fully. He died in 1230, remembered as one of the great co-founders of the Dominican tradition, and was beatified in 1881 by Pope Leo XIII.

Practical Lessons

  1. Support the Mission of Others: Bertrand worked closely alongside St. Dominic, supporting and spreading his vision. In our own lives, this reminds us to encourage and collaborate with others in their good work—whether at home, in our parish, or in our workplace—rather than always seeking to be at the forefront ourselves.
  2. Live Simply and Humbly: Bertrand embraced poverty and simplicity, focusing his energy on service. We can imitate this by decluttering our lives of excess possessions or distractions, creating more space for prayer, family, and meaningful relationships.
  3. Teach and Mentor Others: As a prior, Bertrand trained younger friars with patience and care. In everyday life, this calls us to mentor younger people—whether in faith, family, or professional life—sharing wisdom and setting an example through action.

Prayer

Blessed Bertrand of Garrigues, faithful companion of St. Dominic, you served God with humility, zeal, and simplicity. Pray for us, that we may support the mission of others, live our lives with greater simplicity, and guide those entrusted to our care. Help us to imitate your example of faith and devotion, so that we too may proclaim Christ with both word and deed. Amen.

Quote

“Blessed are the humble who serve quietly, for they build the kingdom of God one soul at a time.” — Blessed Bertrand of Garrigues, O.P.
