St. Paul of the Cross was born in 1694 in Ovada, Italy. From a young age, he felt drawn to a life of prayer and penance, desiring to dedicate himself entirely to Christ crucified. After serving in the military for a short time, he experienced a deep conversion and resolved to live only for God.

In 1720, he founded the Congregation of the Passion (the Passionists), whose mission was to keep alive the memory of Christ’s Passion through preaching and works of charity. Paul was known for his powerful sermons, his compassion for the suffering, and his unwavering devotion to prayer. Despite years of poor health and many trials, he remained steadfast in spreading devotion to the Cross as the ultimate sign of God’s love. He died in 1775 and was canonized in 1867, remembered as a tireless apostle of the Passion of Christ.

Practical Lessons

  1. Stay Rooted in the Cross: Paul believed that meditating on the Passion of Christ was the surest way to grow in holiness. In our lives, we can reflect daily on the Cross, uniting our struggles with Christ and finding hope in His sacrifice.
  2. Persevere Through Trials: Paul suffered poor health and many setbacks in founding his order, but he never gave up. When we face challenges, whether in health, family, or work, we can persevere with faith, knowing that God brings fruit even from suffering.
  3. Preach by Example: Paul’s words were powerful, but it was his compassion and holiness that moved hearts. In daily life, we too can “preach” by living with kindness, integrity, and patience, showing Christ’s love through our actions.

Prayer

St. Paul of the Cross, apostle of the Passion of Christ, intercede for us that we may never forget the love poured out for us on Calvary. Help us to persevere through trials, to live with compassion, and to find strength in the Cross of our Savior. Pray that our lives may bear witness to the hope and mercy we find in Christ crucified. Amen.

Quote
