St. Julie Billiart was born in 1751 in Cuvilly, France. From a young age, she showed a deep love for God and a desire to teach the faith, even memorizing the catechism before she could read. At age 22, she became paralyzed after witnessing a traumatic event, a condition she endured for over 20 years. During the turbulence of the French Revolution, she secretly catechized children and helped protect persecuted priests.

In 1804, she miraculously regained the ability to walk. That same year, she co-founded the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, a congregation dedicated to educating poor and marginalized children. St. Julie spent the rest of her life building schools and spreading the faith across France and Belgium. She died in 1816, and her joyful trust in God earned her the title “Smiling Saint.”

Practical Lessons

  1. Stay Joyful Under Pressure: Even while paralyzed and facing political chaos, St. Julie kept a cheerful spirit. In daily life, try to bring joy into your routine—even a smile or kind word can lift someone else’s day.
  2. Teach with Whatever You Have: Julie taught the faith even when bedridden. You don’t need a classroom or title to share your faith—use social media, dinner conversations, or bedtime stories to pass on what matters.
  3. Help Those on the Margins: She prioritized education for the poor. Look for ways to support underserved communities today—volunteer at a school, donate supplies, or mentor someone who needs guidance.

Prayer

St. Julie Billiart, joyful daughter of God and tireless teacher of the faith, pray for us. Help us to embrace the challenges of life with courage, kindness, and trust in God’s goodness. Intercede for us that we may find creative ways to serve others and teach the truth with love. May your example inspire us to build up the Kingdom of God wherever we are. Amen.
