Sts. Epipodius and Alexander were Christian martyrs of Lyon, France, during the fierce persecutions under Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the 2nd century. Epipodius, a native of Lyon, and Alexander, a Greek, were close friends known for their virtuous lives and strong Christian witness. When Christians were being hunted, the two went into hiding to protect themselves and others, but they were eventually betrayed and arrested.

Refusing to deny Christ, both men were tortured. Alexander was executed first by scourging and beheading, and Epipodius followed two days later, enduring brutal torture before his own beheading. Their courage and friendship in the face of suffering became a symbol of loyalty to Christ and to each other, and their martyrdom inspired many to remain steadfast in the faith. Their feast day is celebrated on April 22.

Practical Lessons

  1. Stay Faithful in Friendships: Epipodius and Alexander supported each other through fear and suffering. In our modern lives, invest in friendships that strengthen your values and faith. Be the kind of friend who listens, prays, and shows up—especially when things get tough.
  2. Stand Firm Under Pressure: When asked to deny Christ, they chose death over betrayal. You may never face martyrdom, but you will face pressure—at work, online, or in relationships—to compromise your beliefs. Be clear about your values and stand by them respectfully, even when it’s unpopular.
  3. Encourage Others in Their Trials: Epipodius and Alexander didn’t just suffer alone—they inspired courage in others. Reach out to someone struggling with their faith, identity, or circumstances. A simple text, call, or prayer can offer real hope.

Prayer

Sts. Epipodius and Alexander, loyal friends and courageous witnesses of Christ, pray for us. Help us to be strong in our friendships and faithful in our convictions. Intercede for us that we may have courage when faced with trials and always remain true to the Gospel. May your example inspire us to live boldly and love generously, even when it costs us. Amen.

Quote
