Madison, WI — Wisconsin Right to Life praised the State Assembly for adopting a budget provision that would stop the state's current subsidization of organizations that provide or promote abortion. The measure was authored by Rep. Joe Leibham (R-Sheboygan) and Rep. Wayne Wood (D-Janesville) and passed by an overwhelming bi-partisan vote of 67-32.
“When people learn that their state tax dollars are subsidizing Planned Parenthood and other organizations that engage in abortion activities, they are outraged,” said Susan Armacost, Legislative Director for Wisconsin Right to Life. “The prestigious national polling firm, Wirthlin Worldwide, surveyed the people of Wisconsin on this very issue and asked them if they objected to their tax dollars going to organizations that provide or promote abortion. A resounding 70% of Wisconsinites do not want their tax dollars misused in this way.”
Under the provisions of the Leibham/Wood measure, organizations like Planned Parenthood would have to make a choice. They can choose to get out of the abortion business and continue to receive funding for pregnancy programs or they can choose to stay in the abortion business and the state will grant the funding to other organizations who choose not to be involved in abortion-related activities.
“It's all about the freedom to choose,” said Armacost. “We applaud Representatives Leibham and Wood and the State Assembly for voting to get the State of Wisconsin out of the abortion business.”
