Dear Catholic Exchange:
ABC recently presented a special on “Jesus and Paul,” with Peter Jennings reporting. It was a poor presentation of Christianity and its history. I heard it is linked to a group called the “Jesus Seminar.” Is there an easy-to-read book that responds to attacks on the faith such as this?
Thank you
Dear Friend in Christ,
Peace in Christ! For a response from a Catholic viewpoint, see this article from the Catholic Educator’s Resource Center that originally appeared in the National Catholic Register on December 4, 1999.
One of the major scholars in the Jesus Seminar is Dr. John Dominic Crossan, professor emeritus at DePaul University. In 1998, Baker Book House (Grand Rapids, MI) published a debate that had taken place between Dr. Crossan and an evangelical apologist, William Craig. The debate was published under the title Will the Real Jesus Stand Up?: A Debate Between William Lane Craig and John Dominic Crossan. Dr. Crossan was co-chair of the Jesus Seminar from 1985-1996 and as chair of the Historical Jesus Section of the Society of Biblical Literature from 1992-1998.
