EWTN News reported last week that Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Clergy, has given his endorsement to Mel Gibson's upcoming film, The Passion. After viewing the film the Cardinal granted an interview to Italian reporter Antonio Gaspari.
EWTNews reports the Cardinal told the interviewer “I would like all our Catholic priests throughout the world to see this film. I hope all Christians will be able to see it, and all people everywhere.” He said the film is “…a triumph of art and faith. It will be a tool for explaining the person and message of Christ. I am confident that it will change for the better everyone who sees it, both Christians and non-Christians alike.”
In another news report, U.S. Archbishop John P. Foley of the Vatican's social-communications office, said that he doubts that any of the criticisms of the movie are well-founded because all the material in the film comes directly from the Gospel accounts. There's nothing in the film that doesn't come from the Gospel accounts. So, if they're critical of the film, they would be critical of the Gospel”, said Foley.
