The Pro-Life Secretariat of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring ads by the Women Deserve Better campaign, highlighting the failure of abortion to meet women's needs.
“Abortion is a reflection that we have not met the needs of women. Women deserve better than abortion,” the ads read.
The ad campaign will begin in January 2003, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized unlimited abortion nationwide.
Beginning January 1st and for the entire month the ads will appear in Washington, D.C. subway trains, buses, and commuter trains as well as in print media.
“According to statistics provided by abortion advocates themselves, the vast majority of women who 'choose' abortion do so precisely because they believed they had no other real choice,” said Cathy Cleaver, Director of Planning and Information for the USCCB's Pro-Life Secretariat. “The reasons women most often cite for their abortions are a lack of financial resources and emotional support. Abortion is not a measure of our society's success in meeting the needs of women, but of its failure.”
“Abortion is a tragedy, for it sets women against their own children,” said Carl Anderson, Chief Executive of the Knights of Columbus. “This is a choice no woman should ever have to make. Our society can, and must, do better to address the needs of women, rather than leaving them and their children to the violence of abortion.”
Added Cleaver: “The Catholic Church is pleased to lend its support to this effort. The Church takes a leading role in offering material and spiritual support to women with untimely pregnancies, and its Project Rachel ministries have offered hope and healing for women and men suffering because of abortion.” The U.S. Catholic bishops have issued a statement, “A Matter of the Heart,” to mark thirty years of legal abortion. In the statement, the bishops note, “Many in the last generation fought for legal abortion; but more today know that women deserve better and so fight for the true freedom of women.”
The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal organization. In 2001, Knights of Columbus at all levels of the organization raised and distributed to charitable causes a record $125 million and volunteered 58.9 million hours of service. They are actively involved in numerous pro-life activities at both the local and national levels.
