U.N. Urged to Correct Population Misconception

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Writing in a recent issue of the Washington Times, Ben J. Wattenberg, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), points out that major media continue to report falsely on the “population explosion” while in fact the world is in a population decline.

Wattenberg calls the massive population decline, the “overwhelming demographic story of our time” and notes that it “has somehow failed to make it into the headlines.” The only remedy is for the United Nations to correct the problem he suggests, since, “only the U.N. has the standing to correct the central misconception of our time.”

“Never have birth and fertility rates fallen so far, so fast, so low, for so long, all over the world. That story continues to be buried by the noise of 'the population explosion,' a powerful trend that peaked decades ago, but which is still promoted by environmental alarmists and their allies,” writes Wattenberg.
