John 11:35
Jesus wept.
The entire miracle of the Incarnation of God as man is wrapped up in these two words. That the god of greeting cards and sentimentality should weep is a truism. That the God who flung the worlds into being at a word should weep is a thunderbolt. That he should stoop down to raise some obscure peasant from the stench of death and kiss him as a friend is stunning. And that he should take his (and our) place in the grave so we could take our place with him in the heavens is beyond comprehension. The only thing left to say to it all is not explanation but sheer spluttering thanks.
