Judges 2:11-19 / Mt 19:16-22
"Whatever they undertook turned into disaster for them…" That’s what today’s Old Testament reading says about the Israelites. The disasters happened over and over, yet they were always surprised. But they shouldn’t have been, because giving their hearts and all their energies to idols, creatures of their own making, could never work. No THING could ever possibly fill their hearts’ deepest desires. The human heart is just too big.
We give our hearts to all kinds of things: our careers, our financial hopes, or, if we’re politicians, to the next election. Those are all good things, but they’re not enough to make a life, though we may delude ourselves into thinking so.
Worse yet, sometimes we want something so badly that we’re willing to do anything to get it, absolutely anything. It’s a recipe for disaster: a goal that’s ultimately too small, and a willingness to cut corners to get there. It IS a recipe for disaster, and we can see the shattered lives all around us.
So what have YOU given YOUR heart to? Is it really enough? Or will it let you down in the end? Take a look at your life through God’s eyes, and trust what you see. You may be ready for a major course correction, and you’ll be blessed if you let yourself see it!
