Romans 8:26-30 / Lk 13:22-30
Even for the brightest and most clear-headed among us, the potential for misreading or misunderstanding reality is never far away. So many things get in the way of our seeing clearly: Doubts, fears, ego, old habits and old prejudices. And the problem is even larger than that: When we can't even see the truth, how can we name it and speak it aloud to the Lord? Sometimes our inner plight seems hopeless, as we slog about in spiritual darkness, not knowing what we need or what we should ask for.
St Paul understood that experience well, having been lost himself in spiritual darkness for quite a while. And from his own knowledge, he offers some welcome reassurance. "The Spirit helps us in our weakness," he says, "for we do not know how to pray as we ought; the Spirit himself makes intercessions for us with groanings which cannot be expressed in speech."
The Holy Spirit, who dwells at the very core of our being, nudges our souls and whispers to us wordlessly, drawing our minds and hearts slowly toward the light. The Spirit IS truth. So listen to the promptings of the Spirit, and walk in faith on the road the Spirit shows you. In his light you will not stumble.
