The Sacrament of Confirmation!

Isaiah 11:2

And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

Revelation is like falling in love.  It happens and then you spend the rest of your life figuring out what happened.  This is well seen in the Sacrament of Confirmation, which is in many ways a sacrament that is still in search of a theology.  Christ gave it to the Church through the Apostles and the Church has always celebrated the sacrament.  But many is the Catholic who has asked, "What exactly are we doing this for?" and received an answer that is tantamount to "Dunno.  But Jesus said to do it.  I'm sure we'll figure out why one of these days."  What we can say is that Confirmation is the sacrament of maturity, friendship with God and sending.  Baptism makes us children of God, but Confirmation makes us friends of His. It empowers us to leave the nursery and go out into the world as adults speaking the friendship of God to the world.  And it gifts us to do this, not in our own strength, but with the strength and wisdom of God Himself.  Only the Holy Spirit can win the world to Christ.  So the Holy Spirit is given us in fullness in Confirmation.  Today, ask for the gifts of the Holy Spirit that you might better live and bear witness to Him.
