the other cheek

By Jonathan Hunter-Kilmer

speaking to You

in front of some

I should not be surprised

at garbage thrown and insults hurled

for what they have surmised

the intimacy that You share

somany willnot see

though You have so many kinds

and even glimpsed in me

for You don't offer

grace to great

or holiness to might

but passion's kiss

and heart in flames

and Your face to our sight

so snuggle I into Your arms

the message that You send

to anyone

or only one

my spirit will expend

if flay my flesh

is what they wish

or spirit's love deny

or faith belittle

though from You

I show

they still decry

forget proceed

accept the lash

as well the tear on Yours

mingle with mine

cheeks meet

nor pine

Your body

mine assures

enflamed I gasp

and step with You

as You uphold Your bride

and show me how to yield

my will

and lose

one cross

my pride
