The Light of the World!

John 8:12

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

In the Middle Ages, it was taken for granted that we could see more noble things less clearly and less noble things more clearly.  In other words, just as it is easier to look at a candle flame than at the sun, so it is easier to see the depths of plumbing or typing than it is to see the mind of God.  It’s not that God hides himself in darkness so much as that he is hidden in endless light.  We can’t see him, not because he isn’t there, but because our eyes can’t bear the light.  In Jesus, the Light beyond all worlds became a candle for our sakes, so that we could see the Light on a human scale.  Once, on a Friday afternoon, that candle was snuffed out.  But three days later it was rekindled as a Paschal Candle and has been setting soul after soul alight ever since.  Today, thank God for his light in Christ Jesus and walk in it.
