The Bishops' Scandal
Dear Catholic Exchange:
I wanted to applaud Fr. Richard Perozich's article addressing the issues of the scandal so clearly. I also wanted to add my opinion that we are faced with not one scandal but two:
1. The scandal of clergy engaging in immoral and illegal sexual activities with minors.
2. The scandal of Bishops who act as though they are above the law and cover up the immoral activities of the priests placed in their charge.
Much has been said already about the first scandal. I wanted to address the second. While it is widely known and understood that the Catholic Church is not a democracy. America is a democracy and as american citizens the Catholic Bishops are under the same duty and obligations that all of us share as responsible americans.
There has been much talk about whether certain bishops have covered up these immoral activities and whether they should be disciplined within the church. Regardless of church law, they have a responsibility to report criminal activity to the proper authorities or risk coming into violation of both american law (obstruction of justice) and God's law (Matt 10:18, 22:21).
In short, I have a great deal of trouble understanding why someone who is so unscrupulous as to allow a child molester to run free is himself not facing prosecution? I think that there is little doubt that if such people were facing criminal charges themselves, they would be less inclined to permit such behavior in others.
I also do not understand how such a bishop can have any credible magisterial authority to teach on faith & moral issues when they appear to share the moral development of a common criminal….
I love God & the Church will all of my being and it is out of that passion that I utterly detest the actions of such people and those who allow them to continue their sacreligious practices.
Pax Christi,
John Beezley
