Taking a Household Inventory

If a disaster hit your home, would you be able to remember all the things you own in order to be reimbursed by your insurance company? Several years ago, a fire destroyed the home of a friend of mine. I helped her as we attempted to compile an inventory of all their worldly belongings. It was a challenging task to say the least.

For a long time I had planned on taking a household inventory, going around from room to room listing everything of value in each location. I finally got around to it last week. First I took pictures of every room. Then, with notebook in hand, I wrote down most of the items in each room. I then placed the pictures and the list in an envelope, dated it, and secured them in a fire-proof box. I plan to update the list on a yearly basis or when anything of great value is purchased.

Hopefully, nothing will ever happen to our home, but I feel a little better knowing that I have that list just in case.
