Take Up the Towel!

John 13:3-4

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel.

It is significant that today’s verse begins by noting that Jesus knew that “all things” had been given into his hands and that he knew was both from God and going to God.  Those are enormous things to know about oneself.  In the hands of fallen men, such knowledge would surely be used as an excuse for tyranny and conquest, as Alexander the Great used his supposed descent from the gods as an excuse to conquer and dominate nations.  But on the night before his battle with sin and death, the Son of God girded himself, not with the armor of Alexander, but with the towel of a slave.  Let us take up that towel today!  For we too are the sons and daughters of God in Christ!
