Tech Central Station reports that a recent study by the Alan Guttmacher Institute discovered just 5% of U.S. gynecologists commit abortions.
The result is considered surprising because of the usually lucrative return for doing abortions. In fact, the number of physicians who are willing to perform abortions is reported to be at the lowest it has ever been in thirty years.
Tech Central writer, Sydney Smith, states that new technology has played a major role in this development rather than serious harassment, which has been sharply declining. He explains that “the same technology”, such as much improved ultrasound, “that has made abortion safer, easier, and quicker, has also dramatically changed the relationship between the physician and the fetus.” Smith concludes “Little wonder that obstetricians no longer treat pregnancy as a disease, and now focus their attention on the well-being of both the fetus and its mother. And it's this change in focus more than anything else that explains the reluctance of physicians to perform abortions.”
