Sup

By Jonathan Hunter-Kilmer

meals

mean so much

greater than

drinking water

well-cooked hen

gathering

what's tasting nice

slice the carrots

boil the rice

pray for what

others have not

and intentions I forgot

food

so often what comes out

words

that is

let passion spout

round a table

or a room

apprehensions

frequent loom

gather

may we all the time

whether bodies

are sublime

as the minds that live therein

needing seat

and leaving din

we've the model now

at last

for the way to end a fast

we collect

our food from You

conversation

filtered through

spirit loving

charity

touching skin and caring see

pouring what we need the most

fire soul to soul with roast

supper last and greatest feast

closeness that has never ceased

in the house or on the road

we eshew that dreaded load

snack or groaning board to spread

my repast is Heaven-led

You turn into honeymoon

swamp confines a shrieking loon

but my loneliness recedes

Love, You are each person's needs
