Dear Catholic Exchange,
I need help in letting go and giving God control over the things in my life. How and where can I find the path to this?
Rita
Dear Rita,
Peace in Christ!
So do I! The concern that you have is one that just about every Christian who is honest shares with you. Surrendering the desire to be in charge and allowing God to do with us what He wants to do is not a “one-shot deal,” but rather a life-long struggle. Because this is the case we recommend that you find a priest in your area who is able to provide you with ongoing counsel. This practice, known as “spiritual direction,” is very common in the Church. In fact, it is difficult to make true progress without it.
In looking for a particular director you may want to begin with a priest that you feel comfortable with. Or you might want to ask a lay person whom you trust if he or she has a suggestion in this regard. Some general things to look for in a spiritual director are reverence in saying the Mass and a love for the Eucharist. Also, a devotion to our Lady is often accompanied by other qualities which make for a valuable director.
