How often do you walk by something in your house or office that reminds you that you need to do something about that particular item – clean it, pick it up, file it, etc. and yet you continue to walk by. I know I do this frequently. Sometimes, it is with good reason. The project is just too big to do anything about at that particular moment and time. Other times, however, the task is small and I waste more time thinking about how I should be getting it done and choosing not to do it than it would take to actually do the task!
I'm trying to rectify this in my life. If a task is truly small – like filing a piece of paper or cleaning a stain off the wall or simply putting an item back where it belongs, I am trying to do it at that moment rather than continuously putting it off. This takes less mental energy as well as provides a sense of accomplishment. Not a bad payoff for a couple minutes of work!
