Jeremiah 2:26-27
As a thief is shamed when caught,
so the house of Israel shall be shamed:
they, their kings, their princes,
their priests, and their prophets, who say to a tree, 'You are my father,'
and to a stone, 'You gave me birth.'
The more things change, the more they stay the same. In ancient times, people faced a choice between worshipping God and worshipping anything else. They put their money in rocks and trees and ignored God. Being less sophisticated they didn't write windy treatises justifying this, they just sacrificed a goat to a rock or a tree and that was that. Today, we still tend to trust more in what we can see than in what we can't, so our culture still puts its money into worshipping rocks and trees. Only, being more sophisticated, we now write windy tomes about "The Earth, Our Mother" to justify the worship of trees and more windy tomes about "The March of Technology" to justify our worship of rocks (in the form of silicon chips). But no matter how windy we get, the fact remains that God is maker of both rocks and trees. The Day will come (like a thief) when all who worship rocks and trees (in whatever form) will be ashamed. Don't be among them. Worship God, not creatures.
