Small Vision

SMALL VISION

Muskrat

Long time since I’ve seen you

Rat tailed blond

Hammocked,

Head and back don’t break

The sagging film of water

Somehow by distortion,

Tilting forward on a water skin

Slide toward us

Why abroad, full sun-lit,

Reed and crayfish eater

Frog’s assassin?

In soft red clay

You live above high water,

Wary swimmer

A tunnel built with claws

And snout

And rudder

And in the darkness do you see

Moon-wavering

White mirrors?

Beware the fox

Who lives not far away –

We’ve seen her in the dusk

At dusk

Like red flame in the air

She runs
