Unlike some of the other writers posting to this blog, I am not an expert in productivity. More than once this week I have spoken to friends of the irony of the fact that I am writing on this blog. Like many of you, I imagine, I can certainly make use of greater productivity in my life. I consider myself a "work in progress" and invite you to walk with me as I take small steps to streamline my life.
At the grocery store today, my husband picked up two stacks of reusable plastic containers. I think that there were six in each package – all the same size with the same size lids. He said "I'm taking these because I am sick of not being able to find covers for the containers we have in there." In my mind, I grumbled about the added expense and that it wasn't something that we really needed, but I had to concede his point that that particular cabinet was out of control. A hodge-podge of plastic containers (most of them recycled butter containers) and sippy cups would tumble out of that door whenever you would open it. I had been choosing to ignore the problem.
So, when we got home from shopping and put the groceries away, I took a few minutes to clean out that shelf. I put almost all of the containers we did have into the recycling bin. Even the sippy cups were recycled. They were really just taking up space seeing that my children have long since outgrown them. I also found a plastic bag in there filled with other plastic bags. I have no idea where that came from.
After I was done, I neatly arranged the few containers that I had saved as well as the new ones we had just bought. The whole process took maybe 10 minutes, but what a sense of accomplishment. I now have a clean cabinet! Granted, it is only one, but as I said, I am taking "small steps!"
