Silence is the Fast of Mind and Heart!

Psalms 62:5

For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from him.

It is a notable thing that there is no psalm which reads, “For God alone my soul waits in noise.”  Silence is the fast of the mind and heart.  There are few things more unendurable to a culture built on hurry and clamor than the simple act of waiting in silence.  Try it, and you will instantly find your head and heart are full of chatter.  That is not a bad discovery to make, just as it is not bad to discover from physical fasting how different things like food or emotions control us.  Such discoveries give us the chance to offer these things to God and ask the help of his Holy Spirit to set us free.  So today, take a little time to fast from speech and noise.  When the inner chatter starts, don’t squash it: offer it to God and ask him to meet you in the silence with his Holy Spirit of hope.
