Share in His Work!

Matthew 6:25

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Workdays being what they are, and our cubicle jobs at Acme Widget Manufacturing being what they are, it is very easy for us to fall into a sort of Darwinian mindset that regards work as part of the daily scramble for survival which is hermetically sealed off from the “spiritual” parts normally reserved for Sundays.  But the reality is that work, as much as prayer, is gift.  Yes, your food, drink, and clothing are bought and paid for by your hard-earned money.  But your ability to earn money is itself a gift of God.  And it is a gift given, like all God’s gifts, to help you and those around you become more like him in whose image you were made.  This means — shockingly, to the American work ethic — that you are not given dignity by your work.  Rather, your work is dignified because it is you, a human person in the image of God, who does it.  Today, step out of the Darwinian scramble for survival and thank God not just for your life, your food, your drink, and your clothing.  Thank him also for making you a participant in his work in the world.
