Round the Paddock

by Pavel Chichikov

My thinking is not linear –

Watch the swallows in the meadow

Jink and turn

Jink and turn

And yet they catch their spiny dinners

Flying crookedly

The little appaloosa in the stable

Watch her gentle patience –

Curried and combed she is

She will bear a child around the paddock

Sweetly as a lamb of God

Above the soft red clay

Everywhere around us is the grace

Of Grace

Gracious is the beauty of it

For God is most courteous

And to all He is most beautiful

To give blessing

Therefore be not cruel or rude

Belittling or savage

For that would be discourtesy to Him

Be gentle as the pony all forebearing

Bear all children round the paddock like the Christ –

Sweet courtesy unfailing
