(AgapePress) – The director of research for the American Family Association says a recent study showing that there is more violence and swearing during the “family hour” on television means parents must take drastic action.
Ed Vitagliano, director of research for AFA, maintains the findings of the study by the Parents Television Council are proof that Hollywood cannot and will not police itself. He says Hollywood cannot be trusted to do the right thing.
“All the promises in the world for self-regulation are being proved to be just a smokescreen,” Vitagliano says. “This is cover to allow Hollywood and to allow writers and producers to do whatever they want.”
Vitagliano says it is time for parents who are concerned about the amount of profanity and violence on television to make a big decision. “I think most parents who are concerned and frustrated with Hollywood's deaf ear … are simply going to have to start completely turning off television or completely scratching out the networks from the nightly lineup for families because it is no longer appropriate content for families,” he says.
The Parents Television Council examined six weeks of family hour programming from the 2000-'01 TV season. The report was released late last week.
