Researcher Says Conference Seeks Ways to Fight Public’s Pro-Life Shift

The world's leading abortion provider recently held a bioethics conference in Utah on issues such as stem-cell research and cloning. One pro-family researcher believes the conference was Planned Parenthood's effort to stem the tide of the abortion battle because their attempts to dehumanize the unborn child aren't working.

“Beyond Abortion: Critical Bioethical Issues in Reproductive Health for the 21st Century” — that was the theme of the three-day conference last week in Snowbird, Utah. Co-sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics, the meeting addressed issues such as how bioethics might mediate the division between science and religion, and how bioethics can inform public policy on what Planned Parenthood calls “reproductive health issues.”

Family Research Council fellow Dr. Pia de Solenni says Planned Parenthood is growing concerned about a shift in society from pro-abortion to a more pro-life stance. She believes prominent legal cases and scientific advances in the media are helping to sway public opinion in a positive direction.

“The American public knew when Laci Peterson was killed that there were two people killed — Connor Peterson was killed, too. We're gaining ground in establishing the humanity of the unborn child and the embryo,” de Solenni says.

She notes that new technology is also changing how people see the unborn. When General Electric began to advertise its new 4-D ultrasound technology through a series of television spots, many saw the detailed images produced as visual support for the pro-life movement's assertion that the embryo is a person, and as such, deserves the full protection of the law.

“These are facts that are proven by science, revealed and understood through science. G.E. ultrasounds have made it very clear — here's this little human being that looks in one way like Mom and in another way like Dad. As technology advances, we're becoming able to put a face on humanity at earlier and earlier stages,” de Solenni says.

The FRC fellow says Planned Parenthood has no choice: in order to protect its multi-million dollar business, as well as the annual $200 million in tax dollars that it gets from the government, the organization has to convince Americans that the unborn child is not a human being.
