Remembering Lepanto: The Rosary Novena

If the current polls are correct, the coming election heralds the destruction of innocent human life like none other.  We appear to be on a path to elect a man who votes for destroying babies not just in the womb, but also those babies who, having survived an attempted abortion, are born alive.  In his eyes these babies who are born alive should be left to die.  Protecting the unborn is our biggest priority.  No other issue, not the economy, not the war and not issues of poverty can touch the intrinsic evil that abortion is.  As Father John Corapi tells us:

No other issue, not all other issues taken together, can constitute a proportionate reason for voting for candidates that intend to preserve and defend this holocaust of innocent human life that is abortion.

It is time to remember the story of Lepanto.  On October 7, 1571, in a historic battle, radical Turkish Muslims stood poised to destroy Christian forces.  Pope Pius V ordered public prayers.  Rosaries were sent up to heaven.  Victory was ultimately achieved and attributed to Our Lady and the Rosary.  After this decisive battle was won at Lepanto, Pope Pius V did two things.  First, he dedicated the first Sunday of October as the feast of the Holy Rosary.  Second, he added “Help of Christians” to the Litany of Loreto.  We should remember that “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress” (Psalm 46).

We need to remember Lepanto.  Our Blessed Mother loves each one of us.  She loves each unborn baby.  She is the “help of all Christians” and she is our help.  Surely she will help us if only we will pray the Rosary as she asked.  Through Mary, God can give us an elected official who can defend life, and “my soul rests in God alone, from whom comes my salvation” (Psalm 62:2).

Tens of millions of dollars have been slated for advertising.  The world and all that is in it seems behind some messages.  Truths have been twisted and people confused to such an extent that what is right now seems wrong and what’s wrong now seems right.  But our Lady can see through this all.  Earthly means may be failing, but Heaven is not.  Heaven is on our side.  Good can overcome the evil of abortion.  God can bring our redemption.  “With your arm you redeemed your people” (Psalm 77:3).

An e-mail was sent from Father John Corapi recently to those on his mailing list.  He urged us to join him in a novena to Our Lady of Victory between October 27th and Election day, November 4th

I strongly urge every one of you to make a Novena and pray the Rosary to Our Lady of Victory between October 27th and Election Day, November 4th. Pray that God’s will be done and the most innocent and utterly vulnerable of our brothers and sisters will be protected from this barbaric and grossly sinful blight on society that is abortion. No woman, and no man, has the right to choose to murder an innocent human being.

It may seem that human means are failing.  But God will never fail.  God is always faithful.  Prayer is our answer.  I plan to join Father Corapi, as he petitions Our Lady through this novena.  Won’t you join in this novena too?

Considering the Battle of Lepanto and the present day one wonders is John McCain the new Don Juan of Austria, the Christian leader, and Barack Obama the new Ali Pasha, the leader of the Muslims. If so, is this fair?

  • yblegen

My friend and I are joining both of you in this novena.

  • Richard Bell

My first, flippant thought is no, it is not fair, as the Ali Pasha was probably against abortion.

The comparison is not direct. It is not that McCain is a christian leader and Obama is a muslim. It is that Obama’s promises to pro-abortion groups will continue and increase the annual slaughter of over a million people, including disproportionate numbers of blacks and hispanics, and McCain will at least veto FOCA. The Ali Pasha is represented by FOCA, and Don Juan is anyone with the inclination to veto it. McCain is a poor Don Juan, but Obama is not Don Juan, at all.

I see your point Richard. It is undeniable. Abortion is the central issue and the menace of our times. It, along with the whole contraceptive agenda, threatens the christian outlook of our country more than anything else, though it may galvanize an extensive catholic witness.

A comment made on another article asserted the fact that the issue of women in combat rests on this primary issue of a woman’s fertility. Women have offered historically the “reverse impulse” to man’s own impulse of aggression. This is connected to their role in nurturing life in the womb. Without contradicting this, it is interesting to observe that some women took to the offensive in the atrocities leading up to Lepanto, i.e. Amalda de Rocas when she took fire to gunpowder upon a Turkish ship. Certainly, in the war against abortion, we see women coming out on the offensive, though our weapons be prayer and persuasive argument.

Despite the truth of Richard’s comment, it remains true that we need stronger and more articulate leaders in our movement of basic human dignity. They are there, but catholic solidarity in this country is not what it needs to be for a full mounted attack to begin. Now, this is indeed a parallel with the long struggle of Christendom against the Ottoman Turks leading up to the victory of Lepanto.

Our pope, however, does give us hope that God is with us and such a turn of events is in store if we remain faithful. I will join in the prayer to Our Lady of Victory for a president who is not bent on the destruction of innocent lives.

For the first time in my life I have been actively campaigning against abortion. So very many people don’t know the truth. SPEAK IT. One of my good friends got angry with me for telling him about Obama and abortion (my friend lives in the swing state of Ohio). He did admit, “You made me think and check facts.” He told me that he has never known anyone who has had an abortion and his wife has only known one woman. I told him that he has known many women who have had abortions, they just never discussed it with him.

People are naive about this issue. SPEAK THE TRUTH. Compose an email and send it to everyone in your address book. Talk about what abortion really is, how many occur here and Obama’s association with it. Explain that “for a mother’s health” really means “for any reason at all”. Many good people just don’t know.

Go to youtube and search “Obama Promises to Sign FOCA”. There he is in all his handsome, eloquent glory promising to kill more babies than ever if he is elected. The video is less than 2 minutes long.
