(AgapePress) – Pro-life activists are furious with Attorney General John Ashcroft’s decision to provide U.S. marshals to protect abortion clinics during a reprise of the 1991 “Summer of Mercy” protests, which begins Saturday in Wichita, Kansas.

Operation Save America spokesman Rusty Thomas accuses Ashcroft and the federal government of covering up for the abortionists and botched abortions.

“I believe John Ashcroft is a brother, and he is a man of his word,” Thomas says. “The problem is he has conceded his word to the enemies of the cross and the pro-abortion industry in the United States of America. He has already surrendered his first principle. He has already declared that abortion, just like Mayor [Bob] Knight [of Wichita], is a legal medical practice.”

Thomas says the churches are remaining silent, and the whole nation is guilty and this is further evidence.

Ashcroft on Thursday directed the U.S. Marshals Service to come up with a plan to help Wichita police provide security during a week of demonstrations. Ashcroft’s announcement followed complaints from pro-abortion groups that the Attorney General was not doing enough to protect clinics from violence.

However, pro-life supporters say they are being unfairly targeted and are having their First Amendment rights violated.
