NEW ORLEANS (LSN.ca/CWNews.com) – Despite a rarely heard public denunciation by the local bishop, Loyola University Law School allowed pro-abortion activist Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women, to speak at the university on March 20. Archbishop Alfred Hughes of New Orleans came out publicly against the proposed speaking engagement before the event.
The archbishop explained his opposition to Gandy was due to NOW's “pro-abortion agenda.” Moreover, the archbishop pointed out that Gandy, a Loyola alumna, is pro-abortion. “Her beliefs are contrary to the clear and unambiguous teachings of the Catholic Church,” he said. Archbishop Hughes also held a meeting with Loyola University president Father Bernard Knoth about the affair.
True to the bishop's warning, Gandy brought her pro-abortion agenda into her address arguing against the appointment of conservative federal judges noting that they would weaken abortion “rights.” Pro-life groups picketed outside the meeting and the local chapter of Priests for Life protested the university's decision with a two-column ad in a local paper accusing Loyola of “fostering a culture of death.”
