Dear Catholic Exchange:
Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. I teach catechism in my local church to kids whose average age is 15. Could you assist me with standard questions on the above subject matter to enable me see if what I give them matches what they should know? My parish is St. Timothy's Catholic Church Ojodu Ikeja Lagos. I teach catechumens preparing for Confirmation.
Thank you.
Yours in his service,
Mike K O Chinwuba
Dear Mr. Chinwuba,
Peace in Christ! Thank you for your question. You are seeking resources to which you can refer in order to ensure that the catechetical instruction your students are receiving is in line with official Church teaching.
It is our recommendation that you refer to the “In Brief” sections in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. These are concise summaries provided at the end of each section of the Catechism. The United States Bishops Conference has a committee that reviews children’s catechisms, and they utilize the “In Brief” sections as a standard for measuring the authenticity and completeness of the lessons. The “In Brief” summaries can also be used as formulations for instructing children. The Catechism can be accessed online through the Vatican website.
I hope this response adequately meets your need. Please feel free to call us at 1-800-MY FAITH or email us with any further questions on this or any other subject.
