by Pavel Chichikov
Two women and three children at the river –
A cloth of lavender, wheat bread and milk
Now they watch the tannin-darkened stream
Leaves flow past them to the Chesapeake
Tranquility their eyes, their faces soft
Ann and Mary and the Holy Trinity
Close enough to speak to in the sun
They might as well be seated at infinity
Why so melancholy little one?
No one has been exiled or bereft,
Come across, be with us if you can
We've had our fill, but just enough is left
