(AgapePress) – Lawmakers in Pennsylvania have started debating new school science standards which would include allowing students to question the theory of evolution.
Christian parents who have kids in public schools have long been concerned that most science teachers have all but dismissed the notions that evolution is just a theory, and that the Genesis account is every bit as valid. In the last few years, an attempt in Kansas to give creation some equal footing in that state’s schools failed.
In the Pennsylvania case, Lehigh University biochemist Michael Behe thinks the proposed changes there are a good idea. He says students will be encouraged to ask critical questions.
“Does this piece of evidence mean that all organisms arose by random mutations and natural selection over the course of history?” he asks. “And what is the evidence that we have to support that notion? And what is the evidence that Darwinian evolution can account for what it says it can account for?”
Behe says he personally believes in what he calls a “higher intelligence” theory of creation because Darwinism has failed to explain the complex systems science has uncovered, in particular, the structure of the cell. He believes students exposed to biology are mature enough to think creatively about evolution and the origins of the earth.
