Parents’ Love, Innovation Contribute to Home School Growth

(AgapePress) – As this year’s public schools wind down, their popularity with parents is fading while home schools continue to grow.

Mike Smith of the Home School Legal Defense Association says this growth can be attributed to one key thing: a parent’s love for their children. “We like to say that if we really love our kids and have a desire to see them academically, emotionally, physically, and spiritually improve, that home schooling is possible for everybody because it’s a matter of desire really,” Smith says.

Smith says the explosion of resource materials, flexible curriculum, and help groups are giving more and more parents the courage they need to take their children’s education into their own hands.

Proponents of at-home education insist innovation plays a key role in the growing movement. Smith says this innovation is a big boost to parents courage.

“It’s the parent trying to figure out the best way to do this and what’s best for the child without any limiting rules and regulations,” Smith says. “When you take responsibility for something and you’re not tied down to one particular thing or two or three, and if you use your creativity, then the sky’s the limit.”

Among the innovations that have sprung from home schooling are cyber schools and co-op working groups. These have added to the enormous resource materials that have been developed by home schoolers to help create the growth in this form of education.
