Our Lady: Queen of Heaven

coronation

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, du1cedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te c1amamus, exsules filii Evae,

Ad te suspiramus,

gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et lesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, 0 pia, 0 dulcis Virgo Maria.

 Hail, Holy Queen

HAIL, holy Queen, Mother of mercy;

hail our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning, and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, most gracious Advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us.

And after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

0 clement, 0 loving, 0 sweet Virgin Mary.

The Queenship of Mary

Ven. Pope Pius XII established this feast in 1954. But Mary’s queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation Gabriel announced that Mary’s Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary “mother of my Lord.”

As in all the mysteries of Mary’s life, Mary is closely associated with Jesus: Her queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship. We can also recall that in the Old Testament the mother of the king has great influence in court. In the fourth century St. Ephrem called Mary “Lady” and “Queen” and Church Fathers and Doctors continued to use the title.

Hymns of the eleventh to thirteenth centuries address Mary as queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail, Queen of Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.” The Dominican rosary and the Franciscan crown as well as numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her queenship. The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast.

In his encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title because she is Mother of God, because she is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive work, because of her preeminent perfection and because of her intercessory power.

Collect from the liturgy of the feast of the Queenship of Mary: Father, you have given us the mother of your Son to be our queen and mother. With the support of her prayers may we come to share the glory of your children in the kingdom of heaven. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

 Introduction to AD CAELI REGINAM ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS XII

ON PROCLAIMING THE QUEENSHIP OF MARY

TO THE VENERABLE BRETHREN, THE PATRIARCHS, PRIMATES, ARCHBISHOPS, BISHIOPS, AND OTHER LOCAL ORDINARIES IN PEACE AND COMMUNION WITH THE HOLY SEE

From the earliest ages of the catholic church a Christian people, whether in time of triumph or more especially in time of crisis, has addressed prayers of petition and hymns of praise and veneration to the Queen of Heaven. And never has that hope wavered which they placed in the Mother of the Divine King, Jesus Christ; nor has that faith ever failed by which we are taught that Mary, the Virgin Mother of God, reigns with a mother's solicitude over the entire world, just as she is crowned in heavenly blessedness with the glory of a Queen.
