Norwood Cites Link Between D.O.E. Corruption, Decline of Public Schools

(AgapePress) – A Georgia congressman who believes the Department of Education should be shut down also believes the new Secretary of Education has taken steps to bring the agency under control.

Representative Charlie Norwood says it is time to find out what is going on at the Department of Education. Recent investigations have revealed waste, fraud, and outright theft of taxpayer dollars totaling almost half-a-billion dollars.

Norwood believes the only way to get to the bottom of the mess is to shut down the department at least temporarily. But he says the problems are worse than the loss or theft of taxpayer’s money.

He says since the department's inception under Jimmy Carter in the late 1970s, problems in public schools have worsened. “It is true the more money we spend and run through the Department of Education it seems the worse the test scores get,” Norwood notes. “There has to be some corollary with that.”

Government schools are also more subject to political agendas, such as the efforts to purge confederate symbols, and the promotion of homosexuality. But Norwood does believe that things can get better under Education Secretary Rod Paige. “I think this secretary is going about the business of trying to clean it up,” Norwood says. “What a mess that place is in.”

Many believe the Department cannot be “fixed,” and that temporary shutdown does not go far enough.
