Norwegian Baby Survives Abortion Attempt

Oslo, Norway — A Norwegian baby girl has proven fighting spirit by being born to a mother who had a bungled abortion and a father who had a failed sterilization.

“It was hard to believe. No doctors had warned us that this could happen,” father Anders Ovretveit said on Thursday.

He was sterilized after a cancer operation and was tested twice to confirm he could not have children.

The 37-year-old warehouseman and his 33-year-old wife Tove had their first big surprise in January last year when she realized she was pregnant, despite his sterilization.

They already had two sons and decided to have an abortion.

Tove thought the abortion had taken the life of her unborn child until she felt pains while playing volleyball, prompting her to take a new pregnancy test at four months – which was positive.

Tove, a farm worker, gave birth two months early to a healthy 2.1kg girl on July 14 last year in a car on the way to the hospital in western Norway.

They named her Trude, which sounds like the Norwegian phrase “believe it”.

The parents broke their silence last week, saying they wanted to warn other parents that sterilization and abortion does not always give parents control over life and death.
