ALBANY Fearing that New York State will lag behind California in embryonic stem-cell research, Democratic senators there proposed legislation Sunday that would see $1 billion allocated for the unethical research for the state.
The proposal, suggested by Senate Democratic leader David A. Paterson, concurs with the $3 billion in spending California allocated last year, and the $380 million also announced by New Jersey Acting Governor Richard J. Codey last week for stem cell research.
The New York and New Jersey lawmakers worry scientists will be attracted to the research grants available to them through California institutions.
