More Than Conquerors!

Romans 8:37

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

Human history has been one long game of King of the Hill.  The Assyrians are conquered by the Babylonians.  The Babylonians are conquered by the Persians.  The Persians are conquered by Alexander.  Alexander’s empire falls into Roman hands.  Rome falls to barbarians.  Barbarians fall to other barbarians.  They split up into warring nation states.  The nation states beat each other up.  Spain, France, England, Germany, the USSR and various others all get their shot at conquest and domination.  (We Americans prefer cultural rather than military conquest, exporting abortion, materialism and hedonism and the “violence solves everything” ethic of Arnold Schwarzenegger as widely as possible, but the theme is remarkably similar.)  Bottom line: the goal of this world is to be Top Dog in this world.  All the sages of this world agree that the way to fight conquest is with conquest.  Only the King of Heaven calls us to be more than conquerors, to transcend conquest altogether, to get out of the game.  He showed us the way by laying down his life in submission to God rather than sacrificing somebody else in order to continue playing the same stupid game of worshipping Satan in order to have all his worthless kingdoms.  Thank God for the love that shows us the way to die to ourselves and live forever!
